1st of July
1st of July
One of the benefits of loving my garden is that there are many ‘best times of the year’.
Today’s best time, this first day of July 2022, is a beautiful deep purple Hellebore bloom. Hellebores have a knack of bringing out my reflective side, they were one of my Mum’s favourite plants.
As the first day of the second half of the year (can you believe that), it is a perfect time to stop, reflect and take stock.
Ask yourselves these questions:
Am I living the life I want to live?
am I living true to who I am and who I want to be?
We are a patchwork of lived experiences, uniquely shaped by the parentage we are born into and the time, space and experiences in which we live; nature and nurture. Much of which is out of our direct control.
For those reading this at a different time or place, a brief snapshot of this week in history:
the war in Ukraine continues
a natural disaster killed more innocent victims in war torn Afghanistan
the economic and political crisis in Sri Lanka continues
‘Roe vs Wade’ was overturned in the U.S.
interest rates are up and an economic downturn is likely
another woman and her children have been murdered by a spouse
rival gang members continue to kill each other
our local emergency system has been in overwhelm again
and the hospitals continue to be under extreme pressure from Covid and the Flu.
What is in our control is how we see ourselves and how we view the world. The story, the narrative, the meaning we give to specific circumstances and experiences. Our own unique coding, our own Rose Coloured Glasses.
To take control, we need to give ourselves permission to turn autopilot off and come aside to explore who we are, what we believe and why we believe it.
Our core beliefs are the blueprint from which we live our lives, whether we realise it or not.
To gain insight and grow as a person we need to get curious.
Ask yourself these questions:
What are my core beliefs?
Why do I believe as I do?
Are my beliefs valid?
Do I believe them to be true?
Are they serving me?
Are they consistent with the way I want to live my life?
So many core beliefs:
I’m flawed
there is something inherently wrong with me
I’m stupid,
I’m lazy,
I’m never going to amount to anything
I’m worthless
I’m a waste of space
I can’t control my emotions
I can’t control my temper
I’m shy
are the result of emotional injuries we received unknowingly, as a child.
Did you know shyness comes as a result of shame. I used to think it was a character trait, now I know it is a result of early childhood trauma.
Shame blames who you are, not what you do. It is the root cause of many of our maladaptive beliefs. Especially the belief of ‘not being enough’.
Few of us escape being shamed, it is part of life (even in the most loving of homes). What we need to understand, is that left unhealed these childhood wounds can become enshrined as core beliefs that drive our daily actions and interactions.
Do you procrastinate? What core belief is driving that? Is it shame? ‘Is it a belief of not being enough? Are you unconsciously protecting yourself from ridicule or failure? ‘If I don’t do it I won’t prove I can’t?
As the second half of 2022 kicks in it is a great time for us to stop and reflect on our core beliefs.
Nb Core beliefs aren’t surface beliefs. They are not the wishful thinking beliefs you want to have. They are the deep often dark, beliefs that colour everything you think, do and are.
Awareness allows for change.
When we take time to unravel what we truly believe and why we believe it, we have the opportunity to see our lives from a new perspective. To understand the circumstances of our past from an adult viewpoint.
We may discover we have childhood wounds that are still actively trying to protect us. That’s ok. As adults we can befriend and release the trauma energy trapped in our bodies, reframe the narrative and set new core beliefs.
Life is a montage of beliefs, stories and meanings. As we heal, mind, body, soul and spirit, from the traumas of the past, we are freed to see life with fresh eyes and create new stories.
What a relief!!! Let that sink in. We do not need to be tied to our past, we can be free to live in the now and walk intentionally into our future.

Until next time
